Размещаю лог - вдруг кто поможет... Установил драйвер ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run, => aticonfig --initial => перезагрузка => fgl_glxgears - 950 fps, glxgears - 3600 fps. => перезагрузка => ВИСЯК. Вот этот лог:

Проблема решилась неожиденно с установкой Метапакета task-gnome (до сих пор я КДЕ юзал). Следуя советам akdengi нормально поставил ati-driver-installer-8-7-x86.x86_64.run Такая, вот. история...
