При сборке одной из зависимостей иксов (emerge xorg-x11), а именно lvm2, вылетает ошибка и компиляция прекращаеться.

вам же наверняка не нужно просто x11? поэтому установите желаемый dm или wm. xorg-server поставится по зависимостям
если достаточно чего-нить самого простого, то emerge xterm: поставится сервер, все нужные библиотеки и драйверы (согласно /etc/make.conf VIDEO_CARDS и INPUT_DEVICES), и даже twm в придачу
но для начала - emerge --sync. такое ощущение, что с portage что-то не в порядке
