суть проблемы:
-дистрибутив Mandiva Linux 2006 (linuxcenter edition 1DVD):
-видиоадаптер PCI-E Sapphire ATI Radeon X800GT - 128Mb aka X800SE aka R423(0x554b)
-монитор Samsung SyncMaster 910n/912n 19'' 1280x1024@75 30-81; 56-85
не стартует X-сервер, т.е. он по команде startx начинает грузиться и тут же виснет
на экране монитора цветные полосы (профилактика блн :( ), комп не на что не реагирует(ни alt-f2,
ни ctrl-alt-f1, ни ctrl-alt-bcks, ни на "хватит уже " ) => жесткий ребут,итак уже 3 дня.
-драйвера the first ставил с родного диска - ati-8.16-x-xmdk + dkms + ati-devel + kernel-source-2.6-12mdk (ATI Radion (fglrx) в XFdrake)
-далее с диска какого-то журнала ati-driver-8.18.8-i386.run - вообще отказались вставать - install error - бла-бла-бла ...
-потом были ati-driver-8.19.10-i386.run и свеженький ati-driver-8.21.7-i386.run => install completed, но
проблема все таже...каша на мониторе. Все это устанавливалось разными способами - с переустановкой самой дривы, в режиме Expert, с генерацией пакажей rpm-mdk (есть в 8.21), ручками => make.sh & make-install.sh. Причем интересно в 8.21.7 не ставится тулза fglrxconfig - ее просто нет, так что не качайте этот run (во всяком случае я ее после инсталла не нашел в /usr/X11R6/bin ).
Итак поставил => fglrxconfig => vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf => reboot => startx =>reset
Логично предположить, что когда муть на экране - дело в настройках экрана. Прогой gtf генерил все Modelin-ы, которые поддерживает мой монитор и вписывал их в Section "Monitor" + частоты, конфига /etc/X11/xorg.conf, (кстати в XF86drake мой моник есть ) результат => снова порчу винт.
Пробовал менять монитор на старый CRT - ни какого эффекта.
Так же этот же дистрибутив стоит на моем старом p-II-300 с карточкой S3 и VMware - все ок (ещобы).
В логе черным по белому (вернее белым по черному) написано, что x800se - R423(0x554b) поддерживается, это собственно касается всех fglrx-ов которые я ставил.Карта определяется, модуль загружается...и ни черта.
Да логи... теперь по логам.
Больше всего вставляет то, что в /var/log/Xorg.0.log нет ошибок (EE) (см.ниже). Нет они были, когда только начинался геморой, когда я редактировал что-то вручную, но тут же правил по этому самому логу и его (EE), а сейчас их нет! чё делать не знаю, я вообще не знаю, чё я делаю...

Что еще... поддержка PCI-E в ядре есть, менял d-sub на dvi, монтировал /dev/shm ... всё идеи кончились
заранее всем спасибо...очень жду помощи... или хотя бы лог загрузки иксов, у кого такая же
конфигурация.(p5gd2-deluxe, p4-3Gh(630)).

У меня такая же фигня. При установки ситстемы выбери не Radion (fglrx), а Radeon в списке дров и всё будет OK.
Пробовал все от vga и vesa до всех Radeon-ов, эффект такой же... - замусоренный экран...
хм... может правда биос обнулить....
