Gnome system tools (Не запускаются утилиты из набора)

После обновления гнома до 2.18 перестали запускаться графические утилиты настройки Gnome system tools (настройка времени, сетевых интерфейсов, управление юзерами и др.). При попытке запустить приложение (даже под рутом) выдается окошко с ошибкой
The configuration could not be loaded
You are not allowed to access the system configuration.
На текущий момент установлен гном 2.18.2, но проблема не исчезла.
Кто может подсказать в чем дело?

ЗЫ советы, мол, редактируй текстовые конфиги не подходят

какой гном ставился? lite или обычный? возможно, что идет ругань из-за отсутствующего модуля для гному для работы с su?
