Когда дошло до sys-libs/ncurses-5.4-r5
получил ошибку:

та же история и для emerge gentoo-dev-sources
перед этой ошибкой была другая о g++, но, после emerge -v module-init-tools, пропала (хотя я видел, что этот module-init-tools ставился перед ошибкой)

Я устанавливал по новой инструкции Gentoo 2004.3 Handbook (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2004.3/index.xml)
А я то думаю - чего-то не хватает, что-то не так....
В ней описан вариант инсталяции со Stage 3...
А так красиво описано, прям как о XOR-вском срезе
