Как подключиться к интернету? (Модем не находится.....)

Мой дистрибутив openSuse 10.3
Не могу ни как подключиться к интернету.
Модем внешний (U.S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT Rev. 11.16.39
, модель № 5630), система его не обнаруживает
(раньше стояла openSuse 10.2 модем обнаруживался,
но подключиться не удавалось, даже номер не набирался),
при попытке в kppp открыть терминал, он зависает.
Установил minicom в качестве порта установил порт ttyS0,
записал в строку инциализации набор номера (чтоб хоть послушать
как он набирает [однако мог ошибиться в синтаксисе команд, т.к.
до этого не общался с модемом через терминал]).
Короче minicom "благополучно" инициализирует модем, однако
я не вижу разницы между "инициализированным" модемом и
неинициализированным, я даже его отключал, и это ни как не
отразилось на работе программы.
Строка инициализации(которая была по умолчанию по-моему тоже не
работала): at&f1&l3&dp67
at- префикс
&f1 - аппаратное управление данными+установка большинства
параметров по умолчанию
l3 - устанавливает максимальную громкость динамика
dp67 - если правильно написал, то это импульсный набор
номера "67"
Помогите пожалуйста а то запарился перезагружаться.

Короче minicom "благополучно" инициализирует модем, однако
я не вижу разницы между "инициализированным" модемом и
неинициализированным, я даже его отключал, и это ни как не
отразилось на работе программы.

Модем должен отзываться на команды. Например, вводите AT, он отвечает OK. Если этого не происходит - возможно выбран не тот порт или шнурок нерабочий и т.п.
Попробуйте перезагрузиться с включенным модемом. Затем изучите вывод команды dmesg.

А модем у меня при загрузке всегда включён(привычка XP)

Ситуация стала немного яснее, похоже у меня просто отключён порт,
я подключил к нему бесперебойник, в Винде он есть, в Линукс нету.
В общем как проверить включён ли порт или нет и как его включить,
возможно нужно поставить дрова на плату, а то я ещё не ставил,
если нужны дрова, то подскажите как поставить, а то я только
на видюху ставил, но там всё автоматически. И если у кого плата
ASUS A7V8X подскажите где взять дрова, а то я смотрел на одном
сайте там было полно дров под АСУС, но для моей модельки не видел.

насчет файрвола и антивиря - думайте)) Первое у вас есть (iptables), второе - по желанию, в принципе не надо.
