Если у вас kopete, в настройках аккаунта поставьте кодировку cp-1251.

Нажимаете Ctrl+A, выбираете свою учётную запись и нажимаете кнопку "Изменить". На вкладке "Дополнительные" в поле "Кодировка" напишите "windows-1251" (Без кавычек 
)

я это вылечил так...........
если Pidgin 2.2.2 то ставь кодировку CP1251 и проблем не будет!

Pidgin 2.3.0. Поля для указания кодировки не нашёл. Раньше было.
