If you need to specify some kernel parameters, just append them to the command. For example, to set vga to `ext', do this:
grub> kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 vga=ext
man mount:
Specifies the journalling mode for file data. Metadata is
always journaled. To use modes other than ordered on the root
file system, pass the mode to the kernel as boot parameter, e.g.
rootflags=data=journal.
